We had a chance to build an outdoor project that had been brewing in our minds for over 3 years. The finished product is an approximately 22' x 12' foot pond with a flag stone patio running right up to the water. There is a break in the 18" to 36" tall and 100' long retaining wall for a natural stone waterfall and steps that will one day lead to the top of the hill.
A mixture of wall stone was used to achieve a random size and shaped retaining wall. The idea was to mix in some lager size stone into the wall to allow for a nice transition from the retaining wall into the natural boulders in the waterfall and pond area.
Excavation, process backfill, the patio and pond construction were done in a weekend warrior home owner fashion. Many thanks for all the help from friends and family! Creative exteriors of Tolland built the retaining wall in amazing time. The wall was built in a dry stack method using small veneer, small flag, 3 side snap and random wall stone. Florida flag, which is a thin veneer stone was used to fill in small spaces in the wall. There is no mortar visible in the front of the wall, however even though it's considered a dry stacked wall there is mortar behind the stone to bind backfilled and wall stone together for stability.
Both my wife and I are extremely happy with the quality and beauty of the natural stone used in the project. The large piece of flag stone in the front of the pond is about 6 feet wide making it a perfect spot to sit and enjoy the fish. We are looking forward to making the finishing touches of plants and mulch in the spring along with regrowing our lawn to tie the whole backyard together.
Best,
